Fun and Adventure at Robinwood
27 pupils from year 4, 5 & 6 have just had a fantastic 3 days at RobinWood Outdoor Centre in Alston near Cumbria. The children completed 14 fabulous activities ranging from climbing & canoeing to caving, zip wire and the most popular Giant swing. The food was excellent, the leaders [Matt, Caroline & Cerys] were great and the accomadation was ideal [except for being woken by the fire alarm at 5:30 in the morning - luckily it was a faulty sensor!]. The children, along with Miss Fothergill Mr Innerdale, & Miss Taylor [who were otherwise known as F.I.T!] staggered back to school on the Friday night, exhausted but elated [Thursday was a 12 hour day with 7 hours of activities!]. It was an unforgettable few days for everyone!
For a fuller report by the children and more photos see extended entry.

West Lane footballers kick off new season with a near miss!
Winlaton West Lane had their first football tournament of the season last Tuesday when they played in the 7-a - side knockout tournament on the school field. It was an encouraging start to the season with the team showing some real promise. They played 4 matches in total, winning 2 and losing 2. The final match was particularly exciting as the top 2 teams qualified for the finals. and a victory would have put them through. Unfortunately however they lost a close match 1-0. Nevertheless it was a most enjoyable afternoon with the team finishing a creditable 3rd.
A more comprehensive report, written by some of the team, and a list of scorers is now in the extended entry
Our next match is in the league, again at home on Tuesday 14th October. Support would be very welcome!

Year 4 get creative
Last week, Miss Fothergill and Year 4 had a fun filled day out at Bill Quay Farm. We took part in this year's sculpture day, which was held at Saltwell Park. The theme this year was ‘Torrents and Towers’. We came prepared with lots of interesting and adventurous ideas. We were split into groups and we all worked alongside an artist to design and create a sculpture made from wood. We had a fantastic day and made some wonderful sculptures from ‘The Creepy Castle’ to ‘The Tower of Doom.’

Hot shots raise a smile and plenty of money
This term every child at West lane had a chance to show off their skills at penalty shooting as well as raising money for the school. James from the “Speed Mark” organisation came into school with a huge inflatable goal which was able to measure the speed of each child’s shot. Everyone got 3 shots [including the teachers!] to see how fast they could shoot. The fastest girl and boy in each year group got a medal and a certificate, and everyone who participated also got a certificate.
This was a sponsored event to raise money for the school [half of all the money raised goes directly to the school], and as an incentive Speed Mark were offering footballs to anyone who raised over £15.00. To our delight the children have managed to raise nearly £2,000, with nearly 100 pupils being entitled to a free football. A special well done to Eleanor Hunter in Year 4 who raised a staggering £54.00. For a list of the “hot Shots” in class see the extended entry

Olympic fever comes to Winlaton West Lane
This year West Lane decided to slightly change the format of our Sports Day. Inspired by the fact that 2008 is an Olympic year, we decided to split the children into 6 countries U.S.A, Russia, Brazil, Australia and of course China and Great Britain.
We also split the sports days into key stage 1 and 2, with the carousel events in the morning being slightly more Olympic orientated [ie more traditional field events]. The afternoon’s competitive events were well supported by parents and culminated in the exciting finals of the relay and long-distance runs. In addition the Friends of West Lane provided refreshments and raised some money for the school. Everybody appeared to have a great time as the weather stayed fine and the school is very grateful to everyone who helped in whatever way they could.
After everyone's score was totalled up the overall winners by a very narrow margin were the Samba sportsman from Brazil. For a full set of results see extended link.

Beware the curse
"Death shall come on swift wings to him that toucheth the tomb of Pharaoh."
So reads a totally imaginary inscription supposedly in the tomb of Tutankhamen. This is one of a number of curses that Year 5/6 AT looked at when finding out about Ancient Egyptian curses. The children enjoyed reading the curses so much that they decided to have a go at writing their own.
Read the curses if you dare!
