Winlaton West Lane had their first football tournament of the season last Tuesday when they played in the 7 - a - side knockout tournament on the school field. It was an encouraging start to the season with the team showing some real promise. They played 4 matches in total, winning 2 and losing 2. The final match was particularly exciting as the top 2 teams qualified for the finals. and a victory would have put them through. Unfortunately however they lost a close match 1 - 0. Nevertheless it was a most enjoyable afternoon with the team finishing a creditable 3rd.
A more comprehensive report, written by some of the team, and a list of scorers is now in the extended entry
Our next match is in the league, again at home on Tuesday 14th October. Support would be very welcome!
Winlaton West Lane 7 - a - side cup competition
Winlaton v Highfield - won 2 - 0.
Highfield kicked off. Nathan Sheppard scored with a tremendous header into the top corner. Then Ryan Hodgson shot out side the penalty area with a brilliant strike into the bottom corner. Finally Daniel Murphy hit a good shot but the keeper made a fantastic save. Highfield only had a couple of attempts and Lewis Hunter saved some powerful shots.
Winlaton v Whickham Parochial - lost 1 - 0
Winlaton were unlucky to lose, they caught us on the break and sadly they scored in the fifth minute to win the match. Unfortunately Nathan Sheppard’s shot was stopped with a tremendous save from their keeper.
Winlaton v LobleyHill – won 1 - 0
In the fourth minute Nathan Sheppard scored by turning past the defender and shooting into the bottom corner. Then they headed the ball goalward and Shay saved us by handling it on the line. So he got sent off and they also got a penalty but our goalkeeper saved it with a fantastic save.
Winlaton v Dunston Hill lost-1-0
Another one where we were unlucky to lose although they’re a really good team. Their goal looked like a handball but it could just have bounced up at him.
