On Saturday 14th November 2009, 6 children from Winlaton West Lane took part in the prestigious Gateshead Cross Country event at Gateshead International Stadium. Our team of Josh Elliott, Ryan Jones, Jack Fothergill, Natasha Johnstone, Megan Hutchinson and Abbie Thornton, showed their stamina and "never give up" attitude as they ploughed through the mud to the finish of the 2 kilometre cross country course .For a more detailed report and final results see extended entry.
The heavy rain the night before had led to fears that it might be a bit of a mud bath but the morning was sunny and although it was indeed very muddy there was a great atmosphere of expectation with semi professional adults and club runners mixing with the scores of primary school children all hoping to have a chance of winning the cash prizes available to winning individuals and teams. The girl's team set of first on the 2 mile course at 11; 15. Each competitor wore a band with a chip in that recorded their time. Megan, Natasha and Abbie ran their hearts out in the mud finishing 34th 35th and 37th respectively.[there were over 120 children in 40 teams taking part].It was then the boys' turn to race. Josh, Ryan and Jack did even better finishing 12th,14th and 28th respectively, being the 4th team to finish, missing out on the prize money by just one place. Everyone was tired but elated by the finish. The children showed a great attitude, representing the school really well and rewarding Mr Gormley's training of them.
