Ho Ho Ho!! Merry Christmas!!
Reception have had a Santa-packed week! On Monday morning they delivered their letters to Santa at Surestart, where he read a fab story about Santa coming to Newcastle. (The one about his visit to Gateshead is still at the publishers!)
The children all joined in with gorgeous singing for Santa. We even heard his reindeer stamping on the roof!
Then in the afternoon, Reception and Nursery had a good old boogie at their Christmas party.
Santa even came to our party too!!
A big well done to all of the children for two fantastic Christmas performances!
Thank you to all the parents for coming to see our show.
A big thank you to the Friends of West Lane for providing warm drinks on such freezing mornings too!
We all enjoyed dressing in spots on Friday to raise money for Children in Need. I bet Pudsey was proud of our Reception children.
To raise even more money for good causes, we made some delicious (though hard!) cookies with smarties in for our grown ups to buy and enjoy!
Dear parents,

Well done Reception for a great visit to the Discovery Museum. The children had lots of fun playing in the 'Water on the Tyne' area learning all about the bridges in Newcastle. They also enjoyed exploring in the science maze and finding out about things from the past.
Eee, how cheeky are Reception!?
We have been inside one of our school neighbours' gardens to get a closer look of their beautiful apple tree!
A big well done to all of the children, all of the parents, Mrs Exley and Mr. Inerdale for making sure the children enjoyed Sport's day (s) in the end, despite the weather. Thank you to everyone for your patience and cooperation.
The children had a great time racing against their friends and carefully balancing a potato on a spoon! Congratulations to those with 1st, 2nd and 3rd stickers and well done to everyone, because as Sarah Page says; 'It's the taking part that counts!'

Mr Blaylock our caretaker came in to talk to the children about all of the jobs he does in school.

Reception children enjoyed meeting Ralf today! They had lots of cuddles and asked Miss Potts questions about how to look after her puppy. Linking to our topic 'People who help us' the children considered what the Vet does to help pets and we now have a Vets surgery in our small world area.
It's back to school and straight back out into the community for the children in Reception to help those in need. Rescuing climbers, tending to poorly animals and keeping law and order in the outdoor area. The traffic wardens have done a great job of making STOP and GO road signs for cyclists and drivers to obey!

We are all excited for Prince William and Kate to get married on the 29th April. To celebrate, we have been playing in our palace role play area with jewels and dresses, making crowns with repeating pattern designs, writing invitations to the big day, making wedding cakes in the playdough and bringing in photographs of people we know getting married.
Reception were thrilled to get the chance to learn how to ride their bikes in the school yard. It was a bit weird at first having the pedals off, but the children enjoyed practising their balancing skills without them! Well done Reception, Keep pedalling!
Reception and nursery have been learning about Chinese New Year this week. They re-enacted the story of all of the animals and created dragon dances and masks. The children had a fun time yesterday tasting some Chinese food!
When the children of Reception came to school on Monday, they thought it was going to be just another ordinary day....Until Mrs Exley arrived carrying a GIGANTIC letter! It was from Mrs Giant from the story 'Jack and the Beanstalk!' Mrs Exley found the letter in the chicken coop!
Reception children were delighted when their grown ups came into their classroom to work with them on lots of exciting number activities.
Thank you to all the parents who were able to come into school.
Even brothers and sisters enjoyed themselves!
Reception made bird feeders! We talked about importance of feeding birds in winter and about different types of birds. We put a hole in a yoghurt pot and tied some string on. Then we cut up lard into small cubes, added grated cheese, peanuts, raisons and bird seeds. We then put it into our pot and put into the fridge. Once set we hung out for the birds to enjoy! Outside we had fun bird watching we found red kites, pigeons and seagulls!
Reception and Nursery had a fantastic Christmas party! The children enjoyed the party food, dancing and games. Santa came to visit all the way from the North Pole with presents for everyone!
Despite snow, ice and chicken pox, Reception children managed to put on two fantastic performances for their grown ups!
We are very proud of all the boys and girls. A big well done from Mrs Exley, Miss Reid, Miss Potts and Mrs Ashby. Thank you to the Friends of West Lane and our helpers Mrs Pollard and Kerry.
O, Frosty the snowman
Was alive as he could be,
And the children say he could laugh
And play just the same as you and me.
Reception went dotty, spotty and absolutely potty for Children in Need! The children made super Pudsey masks, put on crazy clothes, painted their faces and put their hair in mad styles and colours!
Well done everybody! Great effort and super fundraising for a great cause. Pudsey will be very proud of you all!

Take a look at our photostory to see what we did at Saltwell Park!
Wow, what an afternoon we had! Mr. Innerdale and his helpers did an excellent job of organising a fantastic range of activities and races. We had glorious weather and loads of team spirit. Nursery children, Reception children, school staff AND parents/carers joined in! Miss Potts and Ross Whitfield were so speedy! Thank you to everyone for taking part and watching the children have a brilliant time.
It has been a busy time for celebrations at West Lane. We recently celebrated being 'green' by wering green clothes! We thought about how to save energy, turning off electrical appliances and lights, recycling and protecting the environment.
And of course we had to celebrate that very important day of the England game! We all came to school in our England colours to support the team. Some children even stayed late after school to watch the game. Mrs. Whitfield said the atmosphere in the school hall was even better than at the pub!
For International Week, Reception children have been learning all about Italy!
We made pizza with pepperoni, peppers, pineapple and mushrooms. As the weather was so hot we tasted ice cream outside! We also have been looking at photos from Venice and Rome and building the coliseum and gondolas. We have also made a 'tower of pizza'! Our role play is an Italian restaurant and we have been writing our own Italian menus. The children are becoming very confident at speaking Italian saying 'Ciao bella' and 'buongiorno'. They have also learnt the Italian numbers up to 12 and can sing them to the tune of 'Row row row your boat'.
The sun came out for us, and so did the people, and that resulted in a fantastic Summer Fayre on Wednesday 16th June.
There was a really good turn out from the community as a whole and the atmosphere was fantastic.

When Reception went on their trip to Seaton Sluice, the children were very excited about finding a message in a bottle from Patrick Starfish asking for help to find his best friend Spongebob. The children did their best to find him, looking all over St Mary's Island, and even hunted for him at the top of the lighthouse-That's 137 steps you know!
But oh dear...the truth was discovered the day after...
Mrs Exley arrived with a very serious letter. A rich man named Mr. Pennypacker has captured Spongebob and wants the childrens' help to get Patrick too! He offered the children £1,000,000 to help him. The children had to then decide who to help. The parents could join in using marbles on our cloakroom display...shame on those for helping Mr. Pennypacker!!

Rachel Atkinson and Amanda Tweedy came in to share with the children of Winlaton West Lane, the fantastic work that this charity has done to raise money for children's hospitals in the North East. The children and staff of Winlaton West Lane were presented with a baton to inspire us to think of fun and silly ways we could raise money for this valuable charity.
Amanda Tweedy is a reception Mum and made her son Nathan very happy indeed when she came in to Reception to host a poster competition with Rachel. Any ideas for fundraising activities will be warmly welcomed!
