On Saturday 10th July, the school cycle club went on a cycle ride from Newburn to Wylam, the second of our cycle rides this term. A total of 16 children from Key Stage 2 turned up for the ride, along with a number of brave parents. We stopped at Wylam for a picnic. The weather was great, not that anyone needed any excuse to enjoy an ice cream from the local shop.
Mr Innerdale and Mr Gormley would like to thank all those parents who attended as well as those who helped with lifts. They would also like to thank Alan Barlow from Bike It for his assistance and his vast toolkit!
Bike clubs for Year 5/6 and Year 3/4 will start again in September and, following the success of this term's bike rides, another bike ride will be arranged for all our club members.
Enjoy riding your bike this summer and remember to always wear your helmet.
Key Stage 2 children enjoyed a week of cycling activities last week. 35 children showed off their skills. There was a time trial event, also mountain biking, sprint and team races. There was also a cycling event during KS2 Sports Day. Here the children were able to demonstrate how they had tested their abilities and their bikes!
After the team races, times for the various events were added up. Following independent verification, Ryan Jones was declared the winner in the Y5/6 classification, with his brother Sam also proving the victor in Y3/4.
All times are posted up on the Tour de France noticeboard outside Room 9.
More photos can be found on the noticeboard.
Children in year 3/4 have been studying Indian fashion. We all liked the bright coloured patterns on the Saris and decided to make our own bright coloured patterned t-shirts by using a tie dye method.
We think they look fantastic, so much so, some of us even wore them on non-uniform day!
The sun came out for us, and so did the people, and that resulted in a fantastic Summer Fayre on Wednesday 16th June.
There was a really good turn out from the community as a whole and the atmosphere was fantastic.

Our topic this term is India. On Friday we visited the Hindu temple in Newcastle to get a real taste of what life as a Hindu is like. The first thing we did when we arrived at the temple was to take our shoes off as a mark of respect.
In year 3/4 we have been set a task to advertise Newcastle. We have linked up with a school in India and are going to show them why it is fantastic to live in Newcastle. The first thing we needed to do was to split into groups. Each member of the group has a special role from researchers to photographers and graphic designers.
Mrs Young's class have been working really hard with Mr Treherne to master the skills of the violin. We have learnt all the parts of the violin and are able to play simple tunes to the rest of the class.
The Lions of Zulu Land visited our school and we just loved watching their very energetic dances and listening to their wonderful songs during the one hour performance at the beginning of the day.
After the dancing, the 'Lions' came into all of our classrooms and taught us some of their dance moves,
and about their language and culture.
At the end of the day, the whole school came back together again and we got the chance to demonstrate some of our new found skills.
What did you think about the Spring Term reward? Please leave your comments below.

On Wednesday morning, the Music Workshop Team came to Winlaton West Lane Primary to play music and sing songs with Key Stage 2 about France.
We all enjoyed it and some children got the chance to play instruments and do other activities.
Take a look at the Photostory produced by Y5/6 children to find out more about what we got up to.
(sorry File not added yet)
At Winlaton West Lane Primary School we take E-Safety very seriously.
Check out the links below, games and further support about how to keep safe online.
Please take the time to look through this information and discuss it with your child. This will help to re-inforce what they learn in school about using the internet safely.
Our topic this Autumn Term is 'Groovy Greeks.' Open up the file to read our Curriculum Letter and find out about some of the exciting things we will be learning.
Between 14th-16th October, Winlaton West Lane made their annual trip to Robinwood Activity Centre, just outside Alston in Cumbria. The children were very excited, since they had heard such wonderful reports about it from previous year groups, and they were not disappointed.
Last week Year 3 and 4 started off their new topic 'Pillage & Plunder' by going on a trip to Bede's world. We had a wonderful day exploring what life was like during Anglo Saxon times. In the morning we went to the monastery and we all dressed up as monks. We had to wear a habit and take a vow of silence, most of us were able to keep our vow!

On Monday, Lynne from Gateshead CLC visited Winlaton West Lane Primary. Lynne carried out an e-safety talk with each year group to reinforce how to get the most from the internet and stay safe whilst doing so.
You may find the following website useful as it compliments the talk that the children received from Lynne.

Last week, Miss Fothergill and Year 4 had a fun filled day out at Bill Quay Farm. We took part in this year's sculpture day, which was held at Saltwell Park. The theme this year was ‘Torrents and Towers’. We came prepared with lots of interesting and adventurous ideas. We were split into groups and we all worked alongside an artist to design and create a sculpture made from wood. We had a fantastic day and made some wonderful sculptures from ‘The Creepy Castle’ to ‘The Tower of Doom.’

As part of their literacy lessons, Year 4 looked at forms of poetry. They studied several different forms, including:
• Rhyming couplets
• Shape or concrete poetry
• Haiku
• Epitaphs
• Limericks
• Narrative poetry
They then tried to write poems using some of the forms we have studied. Have a look below and see what you think.
As part of their work on language play, Year 3 recently wrote some riddles. Riddles play with language by giving clues about what it is describing without saying what it is.
Mrs Haughton modelled writing a riddle first then the children thought-showered what they could write their own riddles about before writing them up.
What do you think?
As part of our Indian topic Y3 made diva candles out of clay. Clay divas are used to celebrate Diwali. We painted them bright colours and decorated them with sequins. In Literacy we then wrote instructions about how to make divas. Next week we are going to make a gift bag to hold the candles and decorate it by printing patterns on them as they do in India.
Here are some of the examples of the Healthy Eating Boardgames created by Y5GR last year.
Iona and Bethany M. with their game.
Year 5 visited Morpeth on a beautiful sunny day. The Chantry arranged for a piper to play for us and teach us about different types of bagpipes.
Year 5 have been solving mathematics problems based on Newcastle United. We worked together as a team, and for each successful problem solved we had a chance to score goals!

Look at some of our work below.
Mississippi Queen Final
In a very exciting final 7 finalists sailed their steamboats along the Mississippi River.

We have created artwork to be framed. The pictures will be displayed, and on sale, in school.
We have used paints, pastels, pens and pencils.
We hope you enjoy our work! (click on a picture for a larger image)
On Saturday 2nd July Year 4 had a fantastic afternoon at Winlaton Vulcan's Rugby Club where we took part in a rugby tournament.Read on to see how we did.
Here are the children of Y5SE listening carefully to the insructions for the next event!! Or not!

Here is a great photo of Y4VN in action on Sports Day!

This week is big arts week. Year four are being very creative and are making African masks using papier mache and clay.
The papier mache masks will be examples of colourful tribal masks used for a variety of reasons such as rituals and dance.
The clay masks will be examples of Benin masks. Benin masks originate from the Benin tribe in the West of Africa and were again used during riutals as well as other times.
The question is, How sane will Mrs Richardson be by the end of the week?

Y4VN started making papier- mache masks today. It is going to be a very long week!
Winlaton West Lane enjoyed their class sports day today. The weather was lovely and the children had great fun. Lets hope the sun is out on Wednesday !
